This kitchen design, planning, and installation project in Spurstow marks yet another successful collaboration for Holts KDE. We had the pleasure of meeting homeowners Claire and Ben at the site of their new build, where we immediately clicked and gained a clear understanding of their vision. After an inspiring visit to our showroom, we were able to present them with an array of exquisite design possibilities that far exceeded their expectations for a Traditional Shaker kitchen.

Working off plan

We were designing a kitchen to be installed and fitted in a house that didn’t yet exist! The builders had only just began laying the footings so we had to work off plan initially. This is always an exciting challenge for us and is as close to starting from scratch as you can get. Working with Claire and Ben throughout the design phase was an absolute pleasure and we had a blast! Together, we brought their dream of the perfect kitchen in their dream home to life—a rare and thrilling opportunity for any homeowner.

3D kitchen model

Once the design concept was finalized, we created a detailed 3D model of the kitchen. Our advanced modeling software provided Claire and Ben with a realistic, immersive view of how their kitchen would look and feel. This invaluable tool allowed us to explore the space in different lighting conditions, adjusting surfaces and scales to achieve the perfect balance of form and function. Following their approval, we made a few minor refinements to ensure every detail met their expectations.

First Fix Diagram and Coordination with Builders

On final approval from our clients we then progressed on to producing an electrics and plumbing first fix diagram. At this phase we work with the builders to ensure plumbing for the water supply and waste for the sink and washing appliances is correctly positioned to plan. In addition we work with the electricians to get all the electrics for the lighting, sockets and appliances power supply.

This phase is often challenging but dealing with trades-persons is one of our specialties and we always manage to get what the clients want. We make a lighting plan and plumbing specification that can easily be followed and adhered to by the trades-persons.

Understanding Client Requirements

From the outset, Claire and Ben were drawn to a traditional kitchen design, with a particular fondness for the Shaker style. They appreciated its minimalist yet timeless appeal, which blends modern sensibilities with classic charm. We worked to not only meet but exceed their expectations, bringing fresh ideas and details that elevated the design to a new level. The finished kitchen was nothing short of spectacular, and Claire and Ben were delighted with the results.

Traditional Shaker kitchen features

quartz upstands window sill

Upstands and window sill

We used quartz worktop upstands and window sills throughout the kitchen. Again these are robust and easy to keep clean and maintain. These quartz upstands finish the look of your new Quartz worktops perfectly — wouldn’t you agree! The matching window sills blend seamlessly with the upstands.

Quartz worktops

For the worktops, we chose high-quality quartz—engineered stone made from ground quartz mixed with resin and polymers. This material offers both beauty and practicality, creating a timeless, low-maintenance finish that remains pristine for years. The worktops reflect light beautifully, adding depth and warmth to the space.

Behind the range cooker, we crafted a striking tiled feature wall to protect the surface and add visual interest. We chose opal grey landscape gloss tiles arranged in an alternating brick pattern, giving the space an artisanal, handcrafted quality. The subtle variations in tone and texture create a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere.

Belfast sink

The clients were particularly keen on a Belfast sink, and it was the perfect choice for this kitchen. The traditional style of this sink complements the overall design, offering both practical utility and aesthetic charm. Its deep basin is ideal for washing large pots and pans, while its classic look never goes out of style.

For the cooking area, a range cooker was the obvious choice. After much consideration, we settled on a striking black model, which contrasted beautifully with the grey cabinetry and created a focal point in the room. To further enhance the design, we incorporated tongue-and-groove end panels, adding texture and character to the cabinetry.

Shaker Wall and Floor Units

The kitchen’s glazed Shaker doors, paired with pewter knobs, impart a rustic elegance that complements the soft grey tones of the cabinetry. These knobs, with their slightly textured surface, offer a tactile luxury that is both inviting and refined. Open shelving provides practical access to cookbooks and decorative items, while maintaining the kitchen’s airy, uncluttered feel.

The flooring

Flagged rustic style stone floor tiles were laid to create that charming country house kitchen look. These tiles are a darker shade of grey to contrast the rest of the kitchen. They will be hard wearing and last for years with little to no maintenance, just the occasional mop or brush up.

Kitchen island for two

The kitchen island serves as both a functional work surface and a social hub. Topped with a matching azurite quartz slab, the island reflects the light beautifully, creating an inviting atmosphere. The space for two to sit and enjoy a coffee or a cocktail adds a personal touch to the room. Beneath, double storage units with glazed Shaker doors provide ample space for kitchen essentials, completing the design with both style and practicality.

In conclusion, this kitchen is a true reflection of Claire and Ben’s vision—a perfect blend of traditional elegance and modern functionality, designed to be as beautiful as it is practical. We are proud to have played a part in creating a space that will be the heart of their new home for many years to come.
