After All These Years… Something Still Surprises Us

After many decades in the kitchen design and renovation business, we sometimes think we’ve seen everything — and then something surprises us. Likewise, we often feel as though we’ve already met the nicest people in the world. Then, just when we least expect it, we meet another truly delightful family. That’s exactly what happened recently.

A Delightful Couple in Crewe

Recently, we began working with a lovely couple and their young family, who had moved into their new home in Crewe twelve months earlier. The house dated back to the 1950s — and so did the kitchen! While we found it fascinating from a design perspective, our clients understandably struggled to live with it.

Not only did the kitchen show its age, but it also presented an awkward layout with a rather “weird” jutting section of wall. On top of that, the space felt incredibly dark.

Difficult and Clumsy to Use

At one end of the room, a beautiful bay window framed the sink. However, the worktop recessed deeply into the corners, which made everyday tasks feel difficult and clumsy. Furthermore, the small, dark tiles added to the problem and made the area much harder to keep clean.

Once the Height of Fashion

At one time, this kitchen likely represented the height of fashion. Tall cupboards and glazed display units would certainly have impressed visitors decades ago. However, our clients found the tall, dark doors overpowering, especially when they entered through the main doorway.

Meanwhile, the fridge freezer sat awkwardly on the end, sticking out like a sore thumb and disrupting the overall flow of the space.

What Happened Next

Fortunately, Mr and Mrs Client had already spent twelve months thinking about what they wanted. As a result, they came to us with a clear vision.

To create their perfect room, we decided to build the “weird” wall out even further. This clever adjustment allowed us to install three tall housings for a larger-capacity fridge, freezer and double oven. In addition, this redesign formed a charming little nook around the corner, which added both character and practicality.

A Brighter Bay with a Belfast Sink

The bay window area now feels light, bright and welcoming. We installed a stunning quartz worktop with a raised rear section, which creates a practical windowsill while still allowing generous space for the Belfast sink Mrs Client had always wanted.

Not only does the new worktop look beautiful, but it also wipes clean with ease — a major improvement on the previous tiled surface.

A Lovely New Place to Sit

Equally important to our clients, they wanted a comfortable eating area. Therefore, we replaced the tall, dark units with lighter, narrower-depth cabinetry. This change still provides excellent storage; however, it also opens up the space and creates a softer, more decorative seating area.

To complete the look, we incorporated a wine storage rack beneath the table — a small detail that makes a big difference.

We absolutely loved creating this delightful kitchen for such delightful clients — and once again, we feel reminded that no matter how many years pass, wonderful projects and wonderful people always lie ahead.
